The jazz style of dance is an American style that originated in the 1900s as people from African and European heritage began to mix their traditions of dance. The African traditions often incorporated different parts of the body moving to different rhythms, while the European style incorporated the vaudeville tradition of telling a story or creating a comedic scenario through music and dance with traditions of ballet and European jigs. Jazz dance evolved with the popular music of the times such as the Charleston, Swing, and rock and roll. The earliest jazz dance was inspired by jazz music, which gave it its name. Jazz dance is closely related to tap dance and is said to have evolved side by side until the 1950s when jazz dance began to grow in popularity.

The current jazz style of dance is what is seen in many Broadway type shows such as “West Side Story” or “Cats”.  It is highly structured and meant for stage performance. It can be peppy and bright, or more flowing and soulful. Jazz dance is also a form of dance that showcases a dancer’s originality and incorporates improvisation in the sense that a trained jazz dancer will be able to alter their steps to fit their own style and personality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. At both Main Line Dance School locations (Ardmore and Springfield), jazz dance classes are energetic and fun, and consist of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers should ideally have a strong background in ballet to encourage grace and balance. The Main Line dance studio offers a beginning and intermediate jazz program for younger students and teens as well as an adult jazz class. A jazz dance class at either our Main Line or Springfield studio will include a thorough warm up, across the floor exercises and stretches to build strength and flexibility. The dance routines may include turns, kicks, jumps and spins.  Additionally, some of the movements that students may learn in jazz dance classes at the Main Line dance studio include axel turn, barrel jump, knee slide, pivot step and sissone fall.
