Preschool Ballet Classes in Swarthmore For Ages 3-5 (Creative Movement)
Ballet 1 Classes in Swarthmore
Ballet 1 is the perfect choice if you are coming from a preschool dance program, one of our Creative Movement 2 classes, or if you are just starting to dance. The beginning ballet classes include warm-ups, specialized movements across the floor, basic dance positions, barre exercises, and a lot of other fun techniques that you will also be able to apply to other dance styles. We use both the Vaganova and Cecchetti programs which are considered the gold standard for ballet technique.
Ballet 2 Classes in Swarthmore
After one or two years in the Ballet 1 class you will graduate to the Ballet 2 program. These classes focus on learning more advanced dance positions, barre exercises, and vocabulary in order to increase your understanding of the different movements used in ballet.
Ballet 3 Classes in Swarthmore
Ballet 3 classes are designed for dancers that graduate from our Ballet 2 program, students transferring from another studio, teacher recommendation, or a teen that has developed coordination and movement through gymnastics. We also offer you the option of taking this class twice per week and include a half-hour demi-pointe class for more advanced students. Some movements and terms that you will learn include the positions of the arms and legs, relevé, tendu, chasse, arabesque, port de bras, grandejeté, plié, degage, ron de jambe, battement, allegro, bourrée, piqué, and chaine turns.
The Benefits of Ballet
The benefits that you will derive from studying ballet include increased coordination, flexibility, and grace in movement. One of the great things about ballet is that it serves as the foundation for many other common styles of dance such as jazz, tap and modern. Starting off with ballet will be a great asset to you no matter which style of dance you choose to study in the future. Ballet is viewed as a theatrical, expressive and highly technical style of dance that focuses on precise, flowing and highly formalized movements to make dancers appear graceful and ethereal. Since ballet has a theatrical component and often focuses on story-telling or expressing emotion, the study of ballet can also assist you for participation in dramas and musicals.
Introduction to Pointe (Demi-Pointe Class)
This class is offered by teacher recommendation only. It is a half-hour dance class that is added onto the intermediate ballet class. In our pointe class you will learn how to break in toe shoes (shank and box), how to correctly sew ribbons and elastic onto the shoe, find the correct toe pad to make your shoe most comfortable, rolling up through the shank and onto the box, strengthening exercises of the achilles tendon at the barre (and in center), and working the core muscles at the barre in order to maintain balance. We also concentrate on barre work for you in order to promote strength in the arch of your foot (plié, tendu, Dégagé, ronde de jambe). You are given the option to perform steps across the floor en pointe, demi pointe or using the barre as support and are encouraged to take each step to the next level when you are ready.
