About

Woodwind instruments fall into the broader category of wind instruments. These instruments are divided into two categories: flutes and reeds. Flutes include instruments such as the traditional flute and the piccolo, and are played by blowing a stream of air across a sharp edge that splits the stream. Reed instruments include the saxophone, clarinet, oboe and bassoon, and are played by focusing air into a mouthpiece which causes the reed to vibrate. Brass and woodwind instruments can be played in orchestras and concert bands or marching bands. These instruments are widely used in jazz and blues music as well as in current popular music such as rock and R&B (rhythm and blues). Improvised solos are also a part of the tradition of many of these instruments.

Teachers and Philosophy

The woodwind teachers at Main Line School of Music are patient, experienced and well rounded. They each have degrees from accredited universities in music performance, education or composition. They also have experience with live performance and have played and taught a variety of styles of music, from classical to jazz to current popular music. They are trained to set up a line of communication between the parents and the students, to be sensitive to the student’s interests, skill level and style of learning. They have a repertoire of books on all aspects of playing, reading and theory.

In the woodwinds program in our Ardmore and Springfieldlocations, students will have the opportunity to learn their favorite songs or work on the songs they are learning in their school orchestra or band. Teachers will assist in choosing pieces that the student enjoys and are a good match for his or her level and skills. In the Main Line Music studio, woodwindstudents will learn how to hold the instrument and to use proper techniques for making a clear sound. We also focus on warm up activities, scales, arpeggios, note reading and improvisation. Additionally, we include techniques for staying in rhythm, counting beats, music theory, breathing techniques, posture (to help with breath support), increasing range, legato, slurring, vibrato and trills, improving tone and controlling volume. For work in their school band or orchestra, the students may work on preparing solos for their performances, ensemble skills for working with other students, or polishing the pieces they will be performing.
